Art became a common ground for the great thinkers of the time. Because art is subject to the interpretation of the beholder, philosophers and psychologist began to study how our perceptions are formed and interpreted. The experience of art and the reflection on art reminds us that the art of seeing things is a creative process.
Furthermore, each piece of art is a representation of the time and culture they are a part of.
Why is the need for a history lesson important here? To make a long answer short- this is where Loris Malaguzzi found the inspiration to create the first Atelier. A study space in which the Hundred Languages (creative outlets for self expression) could be explored, cultivated, practiced and experienced.
In order to help facilitate the intentionality of the space- Atelieristas (teachers) were created. They brought with them expressive language, art processes, aesthetics and the POETRY of art.
In our school, the Atelier houses elements of light, construction, and art. Attention and care are given to the aesthetic displays of materials throughout the space.
In Reggio Emilia, Ateliers exist as research centers and can contain a variety of experiences or focus around a single theme. It is said that the Atelier becomes a metaphor for language.
Nicole and I had the privilege of visiting several Ateliers during our visit. They included:
Ray of Light
Digital Landscapes
Graphic Narrative Plots
Living Organisms
Wave to Wave (Water)
We were allowed to explore the ateliers independently and then under the guidance of an Atelierista.
These exercises allowed us to better understand how the children might utilize the materials and spark ideas for ways in which we can create invitations for the children to engage in play.
I leave you with two "Ah-ha moments"
1. "We must first open up our own minds before helping to open up the childrens'."
2. "We are materials among materials."
Until tomorrow- CIAO
